For generations, erotic comics often prioritized immediate gratification over narrative depth, epitomized by historical examples like Tijuana bibles. While entertaining, these early strips frequently relied on parody and offered limited re-read value.
The latter half of the 20th century saw a shift as sexually liberated artists and authors began exploring more story-driven erotica, particularly with the rise of hentai in the 1980s. Despite its expansion beyond Japan, this genre never fully integrated into Western or even broader Asian markets. Furthermore, conservative governmental stances in Japan and cultural prudishness in the West constrained the broader acceptance of explicit comic books and graphic novels.
However, the advent of the internet, fostering the dissemination of new ideas and a relaxation of censorship, combined with a renewed wave of sexual liberation in the early 21st century, catalyzed a new era of pornographic comic art. Among the notable creations, the internet-based comic Oglaf stands out as a premier example.
From Out Of A Couple Minds Came A Graphic Yet Novel Graphic Novel Series
Conceived initially as animated pornography, creators Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne reveal that the webcomic has, in their words, "degenerated" into mere sex comedy. Far from implying a decline, Oglaf has, if anything, matured with exquisite refinement over time.
Initially, Oglaf's straightforward narrative followed a male sorceress's apprentice trapped in a cruel and kinky relationship with his war-mongering magical mistress, enduring sexual and physical teasing in each installment. Over time, the series blossomed into intricate multiple plots featuring a rich cast of recurring characters alongside numerous standalone stories, all set within an expansive medieval-themed fantasy realm.
The Format Of The Site Is Simple But Concise
The Oglaf website itself adheres to a minimalist design. After navigating the age verification screen, users gain free access to the entire archive. Each strip is presented with a preview thumbnail, its title, and page count. In select cases, detailed content descriptions are provided, indicating elements present or absent in the strip.
Given that graphic nudity, if not explicit sexuality, is the norm on Oglaf, authors typically only add notes for strips containing minor swearing, being safe-for-work, or at least "safe-ish." Clicking on a strip allows users to navigate between pages using the "Next" button or return to the main "Archive" to select a different strip.
As an additional comedic touch, a humorous single statement or question graces the top of each strip page. A memorable example reads, "To make you passing easier on loved ones, why not be an asshole you entire life?"
Unique Erotic Content In Comic Form
Oglaf is replete with clever puns, suggestive double entendres, subtle humor, and general adolescent raunchiness, elements we are confident most readers will appreciate. Beyond the ongoing saga of The Sorceress and her Apprentice, the Oglaf canon has expanded to include a diverse array of characters.
For instance, there are women on quests for love, often manifested in their desire for various orifices to be pleasurably filled.
Then there is the recurring character Kronar, Son of Man – a figure seemingly designed for women who admired Schwarzenegger in the eighties, men who appreciate muscular physiques, and anyone else who enjoys a well-executed joke. For those unfamiliar, Kronar belongs to a race (or species?) that reproduces patriarchally and parthenogenetically.
While most comics are relatively short, offering quick enjoyment, their length varies. Many are one to a few pages, though some epic narratives span eight to twenty-four pages.
In addition to wholly original characters inspired by Northern European mythology and contemporary high fantasy, storylines and characters draw from medieval Japan, the adventures of Ponce de León, the works of William Shakespeare, and even biblical narratives.
New strips are consistently released every Sunday.
There Are A Few Guest Comics As Well
While Cooper and Bayne have been remarkably diligent in regularly adding new content, they occasionally report being preoccupied with other projects or choose to leverage their platform to provide exposure to fellow authors and artists. These guest contributions, while featuring distinct artistic styles, are consistently talented and equally humorous.
You Can Get Linked To Merchandise, Too
Another prominent link on the main site directs to the Oglaf Patreon and e-store. The latter, hosted by Topatoco, features a range of merchandise including physical Oglaf graphic novels, comic print-outs, pins, and branded t-shirts, all infused with Cooper-Bayne's signature clever humor. While the shirts are somewhat premium-priced, the original Oglaf jokes often justify the expense.
Check Out Oglaf Elsewhere On The Net
A noteworthy feature on Oglaf is the direct links to their Patreon page. For those inclined to offer financial support to the creators, this channel provides a straightforward avenue. A modest pledge of a single US dollar per month not only supports the creation of new Oglaf content but also grants access to exclusive original cartoon (and sometimes erotic) material.
To stay abreast of Oglaf developments, users can subscribe to their newsletter via the orange icon at the bottom right of each comic page and connect to their Twitter feed through the blue icon in the same location.
You Can Even Give Feedback
It is often observed that many creators are unreceptive to critiques of their work, let alone direct contact from fans or critics. However, by scrolling to the bottom of the archive page, users can contact Oglaf's staff via email for technical issues, to report problems, or to provide support.
Praise And Controversy For Oglaf
With its exceptional art style, diverse depictions of sexuality, and razor-sharp humor, Oglaf has garnered significant attention from both mainstream and niche critics. Esteemed publications like the science, tech, and pop culture publication *Inverse*, alongside the sci-fi publisher *Escapist*, have lavished extensive praise on Oglaf. Smaller, specialized periodicals and reviewers such as *Comics Alliance* and *Paste Magazine* have consistently ranked Oglaf as an essential sci-fi/fantasy comic series.
Notably, *Comics Alliance* named Oglaf the #1 Romance and Erotica comic strip in 2016. That same year, Oglaf was awarded the Silver Ledger Award by *The Australian Comics Journal* for its artistic quality, and three years prior, it was recognized as the Best X-Rated Strip by NJ.com. Furthermore, *Cosmopolitan* magazine included Oglaf, alongside Slip Shine, as one of the best publications for women's porn and erotica.
However, during our research, we uncovered a somewhat perplexing issue. Despite semi-animated versions of the comics being promoted on YouTube—and notably, remaining unremoved—it appears that Google has actively blocked Oglaf from appearing in search results for years.
This blocking extends beyond Google to include all major search engines, such as Yahoo and Bing, and even newer independent engines like Ecosia. Curiously, on all these platforms, sites reviewing and linking directly to Oglaf, including Wikipedia, TvTropes, and TheWebComicList, as well as Oglaf's Twitter account, consistently appear in top search results.
Further adding to the anomaly, the only search engines with a relatively high Alexa ranking (i.e., within the top 1,000) that display Oglaf are DuckDuckGo and the Chinese search engine Baidu. From our assessment, this form of soft censorship has been standard practice since 2014 and appears to be global. Despite its long-standing popularity and this widespread blocking, we have been unable to ascertain a specific reason for this action.
Which Looks Better – The Original Oglaf Or The Mobile Version?
We cannot overstate that Oglaf offers an immensely enjoyable reading experience, largely due to its distinctive art style and consistent quality. The same holds true for the website – specifically, the desktop version. It is perplexing, however, that Oglaf.com has not been optimized for mobile, a crucial improvement that is sorely needed.
While the site is accessible on mobile devices with no fidelity issues regarding graphical quality, the lack of optimization means each tab loads as it would on a desktop. This necessitates extensive zooming in and out to read individual panels and navigate between pages, diminishing the mobile user experience.
What We Like About Oglaf
There are numerous aspects to admire about Oglaf. As previously mentioned, each strip boasts exemplary production values, encompassing illustration, character design, and the seamless integration of witty dialogue with unexpected punchlines. Every joke consistently lands, often catching the reader delightfully off guard.
Furthermore, while a few relatively tame comic strips exist, the vast majority feature abundant exposed (animated) flesh and the most engagingly explicit content. Adding to its appeal, the extensive archive, built over years, offers a wealth of material.
What We Hate About Oglaf
Honestly, identifying criticisms was challenging, aside from the mobile website's performance. However, there are a couple of points that *some* individuals might find less appealing. While we personally adore it, we acknowledge that Oglaf's particular brand of humor may not resonate with every reader. Additionally, given the sheer volume of creative and provocative ideas, often expressed through diverse depictions of sexuality, we anticipate that certain readers might be surprised by the content in some strips. Our recommendation is to explore at least four strips before forming a definitive opinion.
How We Would Make Oglaf.com Better
Overall, there is little to change on Oglaf, with one significant exception: the imperative to enhance the mobile version of the website. Hypothetically, this improvement seems straightforward, leading us to speculate why Cooper and Bayne have not yet implemented it. Should they desire assistance, we are ready to offer it.
Additionally, while a minor point—and arguably superfluous given Oglaf's often controversial nature—there are no integrated tools for sharing strips on social media. However, considering the existence of safe-for-work and "iffy" strips, adding sharing buttons would be a welcome feature. Sharing erotica (distinct from pornography) can, hypothetically, occur without repercussions on platforms like Facebook, and more explicit content can be freely disseminated on Twitter.
Do We Recommend This Erotic Comic Strip?
Unequivocally, we strongly recommend that you explore Oglaf and share your thoughts. Our judgment is that, despite minor technical issues with the site, its artistic quality, impressive creativity, and impeccable humor earn Oglaf a perfect five out of five.
